LAKE CITY, SC – Lake City High School head baseball coach Matt Apicella has been named the school’s athletic director, Dr. V. Keith Calicutt, superintendent of Florence County School District Three, announced today.

Apicella replaces Jim Rowell who resigned the position May 23 for personal reasons. Rowell will remain at Lake City High as a teacher and head football coach.

“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and look forward to working with the coaches, parents, community, and alumni to give our student-athletes the best opportunities available,” Apicella said after his appointment. “After meeting with Dr. Callicutt and (Lake City High School principal) Mrs. Kasey Feagin this morning, I am comfortable knowing we share the same vision of continuing to build this athletic department while also raising the bar academically and creating a partnership with this community. I am a true believer in the potential of Lake City and I am honored to be a part of this program.”

LAKE CITY HIGH RECOGNIZES STUDENT-ATHLETES

MAY 14, 2013
LAKE CITY, SC -- Lake City High School recognized its outstanding athletes Thursday, May 14, during the school’s annual athletic banquet.

The guest speaker for the banquet was former Lake City High wrestling coach Mark Tillotson. Coach Tillotson was the architect of Lake City High’s wrestling program, which is the school’s most successful sport with a state championship, eight individual state championships, one lower state championship and 12 region championships.

The school also used the banquet to recognize members of the 2002 state championship wrestling team. Those who attended included Jonathan Jackson, Todd Steward, Ashley Powell, Andrew Miles, Brian McFadden, Watch Brockington and Richard Brockington.

Tillotson stressed the importance of loyalty among student-athletes, coaches, parents and the school. “Loyalty has to be from the heart. You cannot fake it,” he said to the student-athletes. “Walk the walk of loyalty. Do not just talk the talk. Be accountable so that our young people can see the true way to live and show loyalty to others,” Tillotson said to the coaches and parents.

Coach Tillotson invited former Lake City High School student-athletes to provide comments on “loyalty,” the topic of his remarks. Some former Lake City High student-athletes who were unable to attend sent their written thoughts on theimportance of loyalty.
